ABOUT

About
J Pickard & Co. is a family run agricultural merchant covering all aspects of rural life. The company has been trading for over 170 years with depots in the heart of the Devon and Somerset farming community, specialising in cereal seeds, feeding stuffs, fertiliser and agronomy.

A Brief History

The company was founded in 1846 by James Pickard, (a farmer in Burrington) and his son Jonathan.  Jonathan was also the local postmaster and the youngest of seven children working with his father in the business. He married Mary Glass in that year. Jonathan and Mary had two daughters, Elsie and Hilda. In 1911 Elsie married William Short, a local farmer’s son.

Following Jonathan Pickard's death in 1935, William Short carried on the business as sole proprietor until a limited company was formed. This included his son Gordon Short and nephew Roy Short who had both recently returned from World War II and became directors. In 1957, Gordon married Joyce Ford and had three sons John Short, Graham Short and Nigel Short.
